The ART SHOW was a HUGE success!

Thank you everyone for coming out for our annual art show and silent auction! Even in spite of our dreary weather we had a record turn out! Here are a few examples of our amazingly talented students' work!

Art Opportunities

One of my favorite things about Cogburn Woods is all of the chances our artists' have to actually participate in creating art. Of course there is our regular art time, which I wish was SO much longer. But there are also other opportunities as well.

A couple days a week there is after school art through You Gotta Have Art, which I occasionally teach (love getting to see the kiddos after school!).

*The newest YGHA session starts this week. It's not too late to sign up!*

One of our business partners is Out of the Box Art Studio. This studio, located near Wills Park off of highway 9, has many many programs available for kids of all ages; camps, classes, parties, etc. I was recently able to take a tour and was really impressed with all the creativity that goes on there.

Getting ready for the art show!

Our students are working away, wrapping up our unit one projects, which just happen to be for the art show in December!

Soon, the "Year at a Glance" tab will have a list of all of our projects for the year and as the students get finished I'll upload some examples.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back Cougars! I'm sure the 2013-2014 is going to be the best yet! Soon I'll update the site with a preview of this years projects as well as information about our art show.

For today, here are a couple creative things I worked on over the summer. What did you do?

This is a large mural (a painting applied right to the wall) I painted for Mountain Park Elementary School in Roswell. It's almost 6 feet tall and took a total of about 16 hours to finish!!!

I'm very proud of this piece! This is a colored pencil drawing I made for a very good friend. He's a police officer in Florida and this is his badge. This one drawing took me about 20 hrs to complete! 

Updates to the Blog!

Just a heads up.... I added to the "Get to know Ms. Ball" section with some new pictures of my dog Tussle and some of my own artwork!

Also today (or tomorrow) I'm going to try to add a "Tour the Art room" tab.

With a DRY ERASE MARKER!!!!!

You know how I always complain I can't draw properly on the dry erase board with the "big fat" marker? I'm going to have to stop whining and start practicing. Artist Gregory Euclide creates AMAZING images on white boards, using dry erase marker, ON HIS LUNCH BREAK! Astonishing!

29 More Days!

We are absolutely running out of school year! Second grade will have time to squeeze in one more small project before we make our portfolio's the week of May 13th.

We'll be reading/listening to the book The Calabash Cat by James Rumford and creating our own Calabash inspired animals. Although Mr. Rumford's illustrations were done primarily in neutral colors, students will be allowed to use a background color of their choice.

Trip to the High Museum of Art!

Mrs. Gunter and I (Ms. Ball) had an art meeting at the High Museum of Art on the teacher work day. As well as getting to walk through the amazing Frida & Diego exhibit, we got to meet local artist, Evereman.

Keep your eyes peeled next time you're downtown, he leaves his Evereman symbols in hidden places, if you find one you get to keep it! Mrs. Gunter and I got to use a branding press make our own wooden Evereman symbols.

Collagraph - Printmaking

Every year art teachers across our county teach 3rd graders Collagraph printmaking in unit 3. These two videos are great references and would be especially helpful if you decided to try it at home!

Major Blog Update!

I've made HUGE improvements to the blog! There is now a link at the bottom for parents to sign up to volunteer in the art room, a special message from me provided by Voki, some new links and an Art Gallery tab so you can see some of the artwork on display from home!

So many different ways to be creative

2nd Semester - Weaving, Clay and Printmaking!

During second semester most grade levels move into a lot of 3D art. (three dimensional, not flat but taking up space and "popping out" think about the difference between a regular and a 3D movie!) In addition to creating artwork that is actually three dimensional, second through 5th will employ various drawing techniques that create the illusion of depth on a flat surface.

Loving CWE & a fun video!

This has been an amazing year so far! I'm considering myself really lucky to be at Cogburn Woods. As we wrap up our art show options a couple of my classes have had a chance to view this video and wanted to be able to see it at home.

What a wonderful 2011-2012 school year. Please remember you can do anything and be any kind of person you want, you just have to believe in yourself and set your mind to it.

Interesting Weather

I think the stills look like hair. What could you draw and fill with interesting, organic patterns?

March is Youth Art Month (YAM), click the Mountain Park Displays tab to see how beautiful the school looks absolutely covered in student artwork!!!

Every single classroom has art on their bulletin board for the month. Mrs. Haviland and I even hung special boards with additional pieces in empty wall space near the office, and counselor suite.

Quilling

Back in December I posted a video about paper quilling. My 2nd graders are actually going to be doing a quilling project beginning next week. I found a really cool website found here. Check it out and get ready guys!

Food as Art

My 4th graders are getting ready to start a project that involves making food (that looks are realistic as possible) out of clay. We talked about and artist named Kim Burke (her etsy shop, if you're interested, can be found here). She makes amazingly small food miniatures from Polymer Clay.

This project got me thinking about what other types of art people might make having to do with food..... And mysteriously this next picture by Christopher Boffoli, found me on the internet this weekend. The title is: Citrus Mower. 

I love how he strategically peeled the orange and paired it with the perfect plastic toy. Do you think he was making a statement about something from life, or just making an interesting piece of work? 

I'm not saying you should play with your food, but I bet you can come up with some neat ideas of your own.

Two in One day!

Okay, Clearly I have been spending a little more time than usual on the internet. But I think it's been worth it. LOOK at what this artist, Guy Larame, has been creating from old books!



He uses tools to carve into them and create really detailed landscapes. You can see more of his work here. What an awesome way to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The Joy of Books

Hello!

I hope everyone got plenty of rest over the break, this time of year I always feel like we have a ton to do and not enough time to do it in. Classes will be working on either clay or printmaking, weaving and at least one more drawing project for the year. This semester is when some of my most favorite projects happen.

I was online checking my email this morning and came across this fabulous video a couple from Toronto, Canada made using a technique called Stop Animation. It's called "The Joy of Books" I hope it makes you smile like it did me =-)
